Made two years after Citizen Kane, this 1943 version of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre sure looks like star Orson Welles muscled his way behind the camera much of the time. (In fact, costar Joan Fontaine--who plays the title character--has maintained that Welles methodically did just that every day on the set.) Not that the film's official director was a hack: Robert Stevenson, who later had a busy career at Disney making numerous live-action hits for the studio, such as Mary Poppins, gets the credit. But there's no mistaking Welles's masterful hand in the film's bold and creative look, and there's no getting away from his enigmatic charisma as Rochester, the widower who takes in Jane as a governess to his daughter. An engrossing, gorgeous film, there's even a small role for Elizabeth Taylor at the beginning as Jane's unlucky, doomed friend at a cruel boarding school. --Tom Keogh

Orson Welles is Richester (2009-06-17)
I have read the book and yes the 1983 and even the 1996 version are more detailed and in depth considering that they are mini series and I love them as well. For my money Orson captures Rochester's masculinity far better than the actors in the above mentioned versions. It all boils down to the VOICE-so sexy, so strong and even through a paper thin script there are elements that are to be enjoyed especially the 3 young lady actresses, pitch perfect they are as a young Jane her friend Helen and of course the endearing Adele. Joan Fontaine as Jane is a product of the time acting wise and I found her very pretty and Orson a bit too young. But it was a quick paced film and I loved it. and I will state again watch it for his eyes and voice and sheer presence. I would recommend it.

all time favorate (2009-06-09)

Super Short, but One of My Faves (2009-03-17)
I love Orson Welles as Mr. Rochester. His voice is perfect, along with an indescribable intensity, mixed with sarcasm and humor. They didn't follow the book very closely which allowed them to speed through the story. Nevertheless...I enjoyed this immensely. It's amazing how they can restore things. I saw a poor version of this on television years ago. This is pretty clear both sound and picture.

I find a small fault with this film, castingwise, but I wouldn't change it because I love Joan Fontaine - there's no way she could ever look plain, and Jane is supposed to be plain. As I said, I would never change it because I love her movies, but it is an oddity.

The lyrical narration by Joan Fontaine between scenes (transitions) helps to add a nice flow to the film. It was wonderful to see a very young Elizabeth Taylor in this, as Helen - she was beautiful and well-spoken even as a very young girl. This is very short and not much like the book, but it is still very good in my opinion.

Jane Eyre Review (2009-01-10)
Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine are two of my favorite actors and they protray Mr. Rochester and Miss Eyre beautifully in this version of Jane Eyre. Orson Welles is so blunt but masterful and yet graceful at the same time you almost seem to fall in love with him yourself. And Joan Fontaine, while seeming so meek and mild, has a backbone of true steel, perhaps due to where she had to spend her childhood. The way her childhood is portrayed is more graphic than in any version of this movie I have ever seen. It helps round out the personality of Jane Eyre, and also adds depth to the movie. The other actors in this version are cast wonderfully; I recommend this version of Jane Eyre above all others I have seen. If you are looking for a great drama this would be a good one to purchase. I don't think you will be disappointed.
